On Thursday, Apple announced that users of the App Store have downloaded over 50 billion apps. An app is the term often used for a mobile software application that is downloaded to a tablet or smartphone.
The app concept was made popular by Apple, who launched their App Store in 2008, and has been adopted by other mobile app providers, including Amazon, Blackberry, Google, and Microsoft.
Apps cover a broad range of categories including organization and education tools, games, news, and social networking. Some apps are free, while others need to be purchased.
Approximately 500 apps were available when the Apple App Store first opened. The store now offers more than 850,000 apps for Apple products including the iPhone and iPad.
