Today most popular magazines have digital versions of the publication available for viewing. Like digital books (or e-books), a digital magazine provides the same content within a physical publication on the screen of your mobile device.

Many magazines will provide free digital access with your paid physical subscription, or let you purchase individual issues to download and view on a tablet or other mobile device.

With a swipe of your finger you can flip through the pages of your favorite magazines. Some magazines let you test drive the digital experience  before purchasing. A few even provide free subscriptions for mobile access.  For example, Everyday Food – a cooking magazine from Martha Stewart – has a free digital download available for the iPad. Find it at the Apple App Store. Or, if you don’t have an iPad, you can access the digital version of Everyday Food on their website.

Here are five reasons you should give digital magazines a try:

1. Don’t forget your magazine at home

Once you download the app for your favorite magazines, you’ll have access to the latest issue. Tired of carrying a stack of magazines when you travel? As long as you have your mobile tablet with you, you’ll have all your magazine subscriptions at your fingertips.

2. Uncover the extras

Digital publications often provide free bonus features (like extra photos and videos and links to websites) within stories and advertisements to enhance your viewing experience. They also have a digital table of contents which makes it easy to get to the story you want to read.

3. Save information in a snap

Most digital magazines include interactive elements that let you highlight text, bookmark a page within the publication or mark it as a favorite, and email the article to yourself or a friend. Alternatively, you can also capture an image of the page for viewing later.

4. Expand your view

Digital tablets make it possible to enlarge the content on the page. Most applications allow you to easily increase the font size and zoom in on photographs and other visual information so you can take a closer look.

5. Recycle, reduce, reuse

Did you read a story a few issues back that you wish you would have saved, but sent it to the curb with rest of the recycling? With most digital subscriptions you’ll have access to the latest issue, as well as any back issues from your subscription period – so you can recycle old magazine issues and still get to to the information you need, regardless of when it was published.

TIPS

Keep in mind, mobile devices all have limited memory capacity. Just like the coffee table in your living room, your mobile tablet can get cluttered with issues quickly. When you download a digital magazine, make sure you check the size of the issue, your subscriber settings (to determine the number of issues you’ll be able to access at a time), and when an issue will delete (some have automatic settings).

While more and more magazines are available digitally, not all digital magazine applications are available for all mobile devices. Search your app store, or the website of your favorite magazines, to see if it’s available on your mobile device.
