Summer is almost here and with it comes a rush of important events. Father’s Day, Graduations, and Weddings begin to fill the calendar. When you can’t be there in person to celebrate, consider sending a video message to let your friends and loved ones know you’re thinking of them on their special day.
Below are a few tips for shooting and sharing your own video message.
Lights, camera, action
Fortunately, we no longer need to own a video camera the size of a tool box to capture great footage. Many computers, smartphones, and tablets have cameras and microphones build right into the device.
- Make sure you are in a well lit space. Consider going outside or using a room with lots of windows. Remember to face toward the sun or brightest part of the room.
- Locate the camera on your device so that you can make sure you are looking at it and not off in the corner somewhere.
- Now you are ready to go. Hit record, and speak clearly. You can record your message just like you would leave a voice message on a phone after the beep.
Keep it short and sweet
Size matters. Try to keep your video message under one minute.
- It will help you to organize your thoughts and package them into one concise message.
- It will make it easier to send – videos can take up a lot of space and the longer the video is, the more difficult it can be to upload and share. For example, most email platforms limit you to a 25MB attachment.
- Like photos, videos can range in size depending on quality, but one rule of thumb is that 1 minute of video = 25MB.
Share it directly or with a larger audience
There are many options for sharing video content. Shorter videos can be emailed or sent by instant message directly to the recipient by attaching the video file. If you have a longer video or would like to share the video with lots of people you have several options (just remember there is always a chance that the video could go “viral” and be viewed by millions):
- Upload it to a website that specializes in videos like YouTube or Vimeo.
- Post it directly to a social media site like Facebook.
- Send it directly through a file sharing site like GoogleDrive or YouSendIt.
- Videos can also be uploaded to most photo-sharing sites.

They exceed the suggested time limit, but sometimes the message is so valuable it deserves a little extra time.
